The Girl In The Other Office

Alegre's Corner: "John McCain has picked an unknown to run with him, a 44-year old mother of five with Alaskan sensibilities of the drill more for Alaska bent, and the women don't own our bodies, god owns our own bodies bent, which probably tells us all we'll ever find out about her.

There isn't much time before the election, but, one thing we can be fairly sure of is that she doesn't need to be vetted. It's highly unlikely that Sarah Palin is anything other than exactly what she says she is.

She's unlikely to have criminal connections, or have some lover stowed in the back room, caring for her love child. I'd venture to guess she owes no one financial favors, and so she won't have to pledge that she won't make good on any.

I doubt any rich guys have compromised her by seducing her with their connections and wealth. She can't have been planning all along to run for national office, but even so she probably didn't have to think much about keeping her background squeaky clean, or secret. She probably well knows that there is no such thing as a secret anyway.

Why? She's a girl..."

Interesting post, though a bit hard-core (all men are pigs, etc; think about Katherine Harris when reading.)

Palin and Gay Rights

Howling Latina: Pro-Obama Site Slams Paley for Supporting Gay Rights: "Sarah Palin
via the noxious LGF:
(GOV-Alaska-Republican), supports gay rights, says Anchorage Daily News.

Quote “Gov. Sarah Palin vetoed a bill Thursday that sought to block the state from giving public employee benefits such as health insurance to same-sex couples.”

Quote “”It is the Governor’s intention to work with the legislature and to give the people of Alaska an opportunity to express their wishes and intentions whether these benefits should continue,“ the statement from Palin’s administration said.”

Coghill said he’s interested in a new plan that would allow state employees to designate one person — maybe a same-sex partner, but also possibly a family member or roommate — who would be eligible for state-paid benefits. But the employee would have to pay to add that person to his or her benefits.“Sarah Palin’s veto gave gays the same rights as married couples in Alaska.

A vote for McCain/Palin is a vote for gay marriage."

I'm scratching my head; I'll probably be doing that a lot in the coming weeks.

On Leadership

A Distant Sound of Thunder : NO QUARTER: "...Leadership is comprised of many qualities: responsibility, courage, wisdom, experience, judgment, instinct, passion, vision, perseverance, loyalty… among others. But it is founded upon one quality only: sacrifice. All leaders understand this innately but most skew the interpretation to stand it on its ear, they think it must mean your sacrifice. These are always the bad leaders, the narcissists, the warmongers, the tinpot dictators, the power-mad politicians who will sacrifice anyone and everyone to gain their grail. They never seem to achieve it… and because of this fundamental misunderstanding, they never will.

True leadership, is based on self-sacrifice, on the willing gift or, as the Greeks put it, “the sacrifice that goes, consenting”. In the elder days this was literal truth, in times of emergency, of war, of drought or famine, plague or pestilence; the king was called by the god to sacrifice himself for the people.

Oedipus, the King of Thebes sent to the Oracle at Delphi to ask Apollo what to do in a time of great drought and famine. He expected to be called to account for the city’s sins and, in a way, he was. The Oracle told him to “seek out the unclean thing”; he did, and found himself.

We do not demand that our leaders hurl themselves from high places any more nor immolate themselves in the sacred fire nor battle dragons in their lairs. The nightmares are different now: the mushroom cloud, the ravening packs of corporate wolves, the manic hordes of religious madmen (perhaps not so different after all) but the bedrock principle of self-sacrifice remains the defining characteristic of leadership..."

I would like to add that you cannot lead from the rear; the front is often a dangerous place. Leaders must have real, not imagined, courage.

O'Convince Me

From Geraldine Ferraro and the NYT--- What Hillary Clinton's women want: "...Hillary has done her part. Now it's Obama's turn. Some of that third group at the convention were swayed by Hillary's speech. Some are still waiting for Obama to assure them about his experience and ability to handle the job. Some of them are waiting to hear if he really does understand them and their needs.

They want to be sure that when Obama said so frequently in the primaries that 'Our time has come,' that it didn't mean their time had passed."

I just want to say to all the Hillary supporters around here that I am sorry. Watching that manipulated crapshoot that they labeled a roll call was one of the most pathetic political shams I’ve had to watch. As a diehard conservative, I’ve come to appreciate the hard work HRC’s done for my state, NY, and also the hard work she put into this campaign. I also saw how many supporters gave it their all for her campaign.

To see Arkansas and New Jersey, states that she won handidly cast all its votes for Zeus, was a travesty and something worse than what the RBC did with Florida and Michigan. I cannot imagine for the life of me how HRC voters at home in New Jersey can feel aobut having their vote cast for Zeus, a guy that quite a few have extremely harsh feelings about. I’m not certain who was the idiot that thought this would promote unity.

"...So why are we so angry?

We are angry because misogyny raged in the media like the California wild fires I could see from my porch, and the DNC and Obama campaign just let it burn. Only after damage was done did Howard Dean weakly acknowledge that the media was sexist. In the meantime, the Clintons, who have been working for civil rights since they were kids, were derided as racist. Silence from the DNC to this day on that one. Many of us (men and women) will be putting considerable focus on this matter as we move on after November.

We are angry because the DNC has acted in biased and manipulative ways that puts mega-doubt on the appropriateness of the term “Democratic” in the party name. Florida and Michigan are given full rights, but wait…it no longer matters. Caucus fraud was ignored, and for many the totally undemocratic nature of caucuses became clear for the first time. “One man [sic] one vote,” my ass.

Many of us feel that our party has left us. And after being loyal Democrats for many years, this makes us angry.

Again, this isn’t about Hillary. So, if things don’t turn out so well for Obama and the DNC in November, all they have to do is look in the mirror for the answer as to why."

Puma Time

The following was lifted from The Confluence:

'...So while Obama supporters are talking out of both sides of their mouth, PUMA is actually building bridges. It was morning, and I was just coming from the campground office, and a man was standing next tp the PUMAmobile and looking at its banners. He turned to me and put out his hand as if to shake mine. As I went to shake his, I noticed he was handing me a $20 bill.

He said he saw what the party did to Clinton, and was wondering how many Democrats would get really pissed off. Here he is in his own words expressing his PUMAness.'

When he talks about powerful interests, he is talking about the political and economic elites who purposefully set the poor, working and lower middle classes against each other over race in order to maintain their privilege. When the Big Dog advocates unity, it is to fight the divisions that keep people poor, disempowerd and vulnerable. He's talking about political unity to craft the policiy that will create and defend institutions that make people's lives materially better. This is unity for the sake of power..."

The Biden Spam-Out

As I mentioned before, I think the text messaging idea was a major diss for the Veep selection, so I disagree about the brilliance of it all, but Copeland's post is very thorough and well worth a read. Following is his final conclusion:

Fourteen Reasons Why Biden Was a Stupid Choice : NO QUARTER: "...3. The use of text messaging was a brilliant idea. It helps build excitement, involves people in the campaign, and builds a voter base. That being said, it was poorly executed, and did more harm than good. Those folks who signed up for the alert were NOT the first people to know, as promised. The media scooped Obama, anyway. This was a let-down to all those who signed up. It sends a signal that Obama really can’t change things (the media is still in control).

The media figured it out because they knew to watch the Secret Service as a tip-off. They knew that the first person to know would not be the text-messengers but the Secret Service, and that the Secret Service would show up to Biden’s house before the announcement. Obama’s people didn’t know that. Obama thought he could out-fox the media, but didn’t know enough about how the media works its sources to do so. Once again, he is the rookie high school quarterback playing in the Super Bowl. He thinks he is clever by calling the “Statute of Liberty” play, but the play gets quickly shut down by a vastly more knowledgeable and experienced press corps (at least more experienced at these sorts of games). The end result is a dissed media, disappointed supporters, and a reinforced rookie image.

If he tries to walk on water he will sink in a heartbeat and be thrashing the water trying to grab a lifeline."

Scaife vs. Pickens

garychapelhill works up a fine post comparing the "progressive sins" of Clinton and Obama and the people they talk to. He concludes thusly:

The Obama Rules Redux « The Confluence

"...It is quite a different thing, in my opinion, to sit down with someone who not only four years ago, very successfully, dragged John Kerry’s reputation as a war hero through the mud, essentially accusing him of lying about his wartime heroics, and being a turncoat when he opposed the war after returning home. At least Hillary was sitting down with someone who had dragged HER family’s name through the dirt. To me it showed graciousness beyond belief, a characteristic that would be tremendous asset as president. Pickens however shows no remorse for what he did to Kerry, and saddling this nation with four years of a criminal president, unending war, and the loss of some of our most cherished and sacred rights. Scaife seems like a pussycat in comparison.

So where is the outcry from Mr. Noah? Kos? Arianna? Obamamman? Kerry? *crickets* Well color me surprised. Once again all of these people, the so called Democratic Party, our corrupt and lying media, the “progressive” blogosphere, show the world what petty hypocrites they really are."

More On White People

Anglachel's Journal: "So Howard Dean called the Republican Party 'the white party'. Strategically speaking, this insult (he has said it before in other situations so it is neither a gaffe nor an accident) is beyond tone deaf and is sheer political idiocy. This moronic mouthing off plays into every standard stereotype of an arrogant Stevensonian elitist and adds fuel to the race-baiting fires already burning through the Democrats' support this year, thanks to Obama's smear-and-run campaign.

This is a different claim than if Dean had gone after the Republicans as the 'racist party' or even the 'anti-minorty party', which is what he probably thought he was doing. By making an insult out of a biological fact instead of a pattern of behavior, Dean has declared that he (and thus Democrats as such, being as how he is the DNC Chair) think that 'white' is a suspect and dangerous category of person. He did a crude inversion of racist claims about non-whites and it says a hell of a lot about the moral and ethical midden between Dean's ears..."

I heard Nixon answer a question once upon a time about the "Cambodian incursion." He talked for nearly thirty minutes without interruption from the reporter, and at the end of his answer, the three of us sitting in the living room all said, "Whaaat?" Obama seems to do that every time he is asked a question. It's not an endearing quality. (This could be what I heard from Nixon-- it was a long time ago.)

The Associated Press: Feds: Senator got favors, contractor got key ally: "Feds: Senator got favors, contractor got key ally

By MATT APUZZO – 41 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI agents spent years investigating Sen. Ted Stevens. They read his e-mails, searched his home and taped his phone conversations with his friends.

This week, the Justice Department offered its first public glimpse at what it uncovered: a direct line of communication from a corrupt Alaska oil contractor to one of the nation's most powerful senators. When VECO Corp. executives needed help securing business, winning grants or navigating the bureaucracy, they called Stevens.

And when Stevens needed a new generator for his house, a car for his daughter or a job for his son, prosecutors say he called VECO, the same company that oversaw an extensive renovation project on his home.

The Justice Department didn't bring charges against Stevens for any of that, but they want jurors to see the evidence. Stevens goes on trial next month, not for bribery but for concealing the renovation project and other gifts on Senate financial disclosure forms..."

Rangel Dissed

Is Holding Grudges Good Governing? | Corrente: "I know. I know. We don’t have the “context” and “its from Politico”, but if this is true, what do we have to look forward in an Obama presidency:

Rangel surrogates approached Obama staffers this week about the possibility of securing him a slot at the podium, making the case that it would showcase reconciliation between the nominee and Hillary Rodham Clinton’s African-American supporters.

But they were told that the 78-year-old congressman’s support for Clinton earned him a place at the end of the line behind Barack Obama’s loyalists — even if Rangel played a crucial part in prodding Clinton to abandon her presidential bid in June.

One of myriad problems with Bush was his surrounding of like minded people and purging of dissenters, even former allies (Paul O’Neil, US Attorneys, etc.). This is not a trait I want to have in a president.

I’ve been saying this since the Krugman purge, but Obama and/or his surrogates have displayed a petty vindictive behavior that I find scary. Rather than truly reaching out to Hillary supporters, they spare no chance to stick it to people who didn’t support him. (Which is why the idea of Obama controlling what progressive organizations get money is truly disturbing.)..."

Fear and Loathing

The Obama Doctrine : NO QUARTER: "On the day after Russia invaded Georgia, Barack Obama urged even-handed “restraint” on both sides without mentioning Russia by name or rebuking its aggression. Thus Obama proposed his “Rodney King Doctrine,” after the African-American taxi driver, beaten by Los Angeles policemen in 1991, who plaintively asked, “Can we all get along?” The acquittal of the police in 1992 triggered the LA riots.

The Russians took the Obama Doctrine as another green light—not just for their attack but also for extending their power in the foreseeable future under a potential Obama administration."

Diminshing The Veep

The Associated Press: Obama supporters to get VP announcement via text: "WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is close to choosing a running mate, and the first person to find out could be you.

'No other campaign has done this before,' campaign manager David Plouffe said in the e-mail. 'You can be part of this important moment...'"

Veep has never been much of a job but at least when you got nominated, there was some fanfare and a press conference or two and you got to make a little speech. But not this time. What better way to further dim the faint light of the Vice-Presidential candle than to announce the selection via spam. Does this, in fact, mean that he is going to pick a woman and this is just his way of putting her in her place from the get-go?

Obama's No. 1 Media Problem, MarketWatch Media Columnist Jon Friedman Says Democrat Better Get Used To Probing, Critical Coverage - CBS News: "...Too often, Obama and his handlers have overreacted to what we've come to accept as frivolous, basically harmless 'coverage' by the celebrity-obsessed mainstream media.

Two examples of him getting his back up: Obama made a federal case of the appearance by his daughters on 'Access Hollywood' and he was snippy with reporters when he was pressed about his unexpected email friendship with actress Scarlett Johansson.

Sure, these are minor events. But if he is going to be anal about the small stuff, it may get ugly if he loses his composure about something important.

Obama has staked his claim by offering American voters a fresh voice and a strong sense of optimism about the future. Does this sound familiar

This will be considered off-topic — but it isn’t. I thought I’d share this letter which was sent to the Editor of the Times-Dispatch by a gentlemen who escaped Cuba in the 1960’s. His words come from the experience of believing in someone, without taking the time to know who they really are, and the consequences that followed:

Subject: Celebration

From Richmond Times-Dispatch, Monday, July 7, 2008

Dear Editor, Times-Dispatch:

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day, and on July 4, I celebrate America ’s. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.

On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba, and a few months later, I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I’ve thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, so when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said, ‘Praise the Lord.’ And when the young leader said, ‘I will be for change and I’ ll bring you change,’ everone yelled, ‘Viva Fidel!’

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner’s guns went silent, the people’s guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education, it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented, Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over, more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I’m back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we in America would never fall for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America ?

Would we?

Clinton Wants Financial Abuse Stopped

Sen. Clinton in article in the WSJ says that No Crisis Is Immune From Exploitation Under Bush - WSJ.com: "...While touting fiscal responsibility, President Bush and his administration have lined the pockets of political cronies like Halliburton and Blackwater. While calling for earmark reform, the president has allowed no-bid and questionable contracting throughout the federal government to dwarf earmark spending by a 10-to-1 ratio.

If we're going to get serious about putting our nation's fiscal house in order, let's talk about putting an end to billions in no-bid contract awards to unaccountable contractors. Let's talk about the number of lucrative contracts and bonuses being paid for duties never performed, promises never fulfilled, and contracts falsely described as complete. And let's talk about reforming the federal contracting system so that we can take on the real waste, fraud and abuse in our federal government.

I've proposed a comprehensive overhaul to root out corruption in no-bid contracts and other shady deals. Reforms must include the following:.."

The new breed of automobiles would fetch a $7,000 federal tax credit for buyers.

He predicted that 1 million plug-in hybrids -- such as the Chevrolet Volt set to debut in 2010 -- would be produced within six years. In March, Morgan Stanley estimated that U.S. plug-in hybrid sales would not top 1 million annually before 2020..."

That's nice, but how many times do the taxpayers have to bail-out the auto industry? Shouldn't our tax dollars be getting percentages of the companies? Yeah, I know they pay taxes, and I'm not really opposed to this idea, but we need to think clearly about which tax policies we want to chase. The nation is in the hole and we can't afford to give away billions overseas and billions at home.

I wonder what kind of subsidized health care we could create with a few billion.

Bloomberg.com: Politics: "Obama Open to Offshore Drilling as Part of Senate `Compromise'

By Kim Chipman

Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama said he's willing to support an expansion of offshore oil drilling that's part of an $84 billion Senate plan aimed at increasing domestic energy production.

Obama, who has opposed more drilling off the nation's coastlines, said that while he ``remains skeptical'' about the idea, he would compromise because the proposal offers a ``careful and responsible'' drilling agenda. It also calls for other measures to wean the country off its dependence on imported oil.
