Criminal Miscarriage(s)

Utah Bill Criminalizes Miscarriage | RHRealityCheck.org

"A bill passed by the Utah House and Senate this week and waiting for the governor's signature, will make it a crime for a woman to have a miscarriage, and make induced abortion a crime in some instances.

According Lynn M. Paltrow, executive director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women, what makes Utah's proposed law unique is that it is specifically designed to be punitive toward pregnant women, not those who might assist or cause an illegal abortion or unintended miscarriage..."

In a different study of the 652 CEOs and CTOs of 502 tech companies, we researched the correlation between education and the sales and headcount of companies founded. We learned that the there was a significant difference between companies started by founders with just high-school diplomas and the rest. Education provided a huge advantage. But there wasn’t a big difference between firms founded by Ivy-league graduates and the graduates of other universities..."

The Good Old Days Of HC Reform

Cassidy: Health care is changing with or without reform - San Jose Mercury News

"Remember back when we were going to reform health care?

A year ago, powerful special interests stood together and said they would share some pain for the good of the system and the country. Some congressional Republicans expressed interest in working with Democrats, who had the votes and popular support. All of which was good news for the growing number of Silicon Valley residents who were their own bosses and their own health-insurance providers.

But now? Now health care reform is a mess. Now it's clear that those who were willing to talk about pain were not actually willing to endure it. Now Republicans in Congress are intent on stopping an overhaul and Democrats are running scared, afraid that a vote to fix health care will mean a vote against them. Maybe a weak spine is a pre-existing condition for Congress..."

Party Problems

Michael Smerconish: For Me, the Party Is Over: "...The national GOP is a party of exclusion and litmus tests, dominated on social issues by the religious right, with zero discernible outreach by the national party to anyone who doesn't fit neatly within its parameters. Instead, the GOP has extended itself to its fringe while throwing under the bus long-standing members like New York Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, a McCain-Palin supporter in 2008 who told me she voted with her Republican leadership 90 percent of the time before running for Congress last fall.

Which is not to say I feel comfortable in the Democratic Party, either. Weeks before Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh's announcement that he will not seek reelection, I noted the centrist former governor's words to the Wall Street Journal's Gerald Seib. Too many Democrats, Bayh said in that interview, are 'tone-deaf' to Americans' belief that the party had 'overreached rather than looking for consensus with moderates and independents...'"

HC Blame Game

Officials Racing to Pin Blame for High Health Costs | TopNews United States: "The fight over who is to be blamed for the rising health-care costs is now escalating, as officials and groups look to pin the problem on each other and say that none of the health-care legislations under consideration have managed to do enough to solve it.

In 2009, US spending on healthcare hit a record figure of $2.5 Trillion, as have been shared by Federal estimate. Over the coming 10 years, it is expected to climb to $4.5 Trillion..."

So when is someone going to talk about limiting ER health care for the uninsured, noncitizens? Or capping the costs that hospitals can pass along to the insured? Or the benefits to businesses if government takes over the cost of health care? There is plenty of blame to go around, but there are also plenty of potential solutions to be tried, most of which don't have anything to do with cutting taxes or invading Iran.

“Did you ever get the feeling you weren’t being told the complete truth?”

Hummm. Just about every minute of the day, particularly if I’m listening to or reading something from our brave media types.

Dakinikat, thank you for saying what needs to be said, again and again. The conservatives have no real solutions but they have plenty of buzzwords–liberty, free market, Founding Fathers, family, Rule of Law, which they use to confound and mesmerize people without defining how limited and narrow the scope actually is.

Though the Dems are in a self-inflicted tailspin right now, I’m getting sick of the revisionist history from the other side. You’d think this was brand new, something we’d never tried–a trickle-down economy, an ever-increasing military budget to keep out the boogie man, the Rule of Law that applies mostly to the wealthy and vested financial interests, the family that is defined by “their” dictionary and the need to put the government’s “nose between a woman’s legs” [love that whole section].

And the list goes on.

But wave the flag, bring up Mom and apple pie, and we’re all suppose to quiver and pull the lever with the big “R” on it.

What is this an attempt at mass hypnosis? Throw a little pixie dust around and maybe we’ll even forget the Bush years.

What worries me is people are desperate right now. The economy sucks despite all the happy talk. And desperate people do desperate things. Like fall for more hopey-changey nonsense. Which this Mt. Vernon Statement is, nothing more.

From The Lying Eyes Department

World may not be warming, say scientists - Times Online. ...because of inherent biases toward warming in the location of the weather collection stations. Check. Got it. Reasonable position. So when I look at the Arctic ice cap and see it is melting that is because the world is not getting warmer? I'll be more convinced if I see the ice cap growing by leaps and bounds this summer. We may be in for an ice age because the melting ice will flood the Hudson Bay and release quadrillions of gallons of fresh water into the ocean. Being less dense than salt water, the fresh water will sink, bringing the North Atlantic's thermal conveyor belt to a halt. No warm water will flow north and consequently temperatures will plummet in North America. That would be a bad thing.

Solving The Health Care Cost Crisis

This is how to do it: After Years of Quiet, Expecting a Boom in U.S. Medical Schools - NYTimes.com.

More physicians equals less cost; simple supply and demand. Of course, in the medical rackets, that is a hard one to pull off since the professional medical unions (the AMA et. al.) will resist any attempt to produce more practitioners since they also know the inevitable result. The medical rackets of late have pulled off additional scams by continually upping the educational requirements for certain activities and requiring supervision of practically everything by a whole chain of well-paid professionals. Their defense is, of course, "we're saving your life, buddy." Maybe so, but just as higher education has grown an entire caste of very high paid middle managers, middle middle mangers, and upper middle managers, where once there was one manager and a secretary, so has the medical profession grown an entire subsystem of personnel who must be managed, supervised, and accredited, all of which is sucking money out the direct care end of the medical food chain. Yeah but, "you don't want an incompetent, tech school doctor working on you, do you?" And what exactly does an Ivy League degree guarantee? For inspiration, look toward George Bush and Barack Obama .

O Defines Insanity

My italics. Note the source of this little tid-bit.

Peggy Noonan: The Off-Center President - WSJ.com: "...A week after the Sawyer interview, the president had a stunning and revealing exchange with Sen. Blanche Lincoln, the Arkansas Democrat likely to lose her 2010 re-election campaign. He was meeting with Senate Democrats to urge them to continue with his legislative agenda. Mrs. Lincoln took the opportunity to beseech him to change it. She urged him to distance his administration from 'people who want extremes,' and to find 'common ground' with Republicans in producing legislation that would give those in business the 'certainty' they need to create jobs.

While answering, Mr. Obama raised his voice slightly and quickened his cadence. 'If the price of certainty is essentially for us to adopt the exact same proposals that were in place leading up to the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression . . . the result is going to be the same. I don't know why we would expect a different outcome pursuing the exact same policy that got us in this fix in the first place.' He continued: 'If our response ends up being, you know . . . we don't want to stir things up here,' then 'I don't know why people would say, 'Boy, we really want to make sure those Democrats are in Washington fighting for us...''"

Global Warming Snow

Snowstorm and climate change - Los Angeles Times: "...Snow and global warming aren't mutually exclusive, climate scientists say. For starters, the amount of recorded warming over the last century, about 1 degree Fahrenheit above preindustrial levels, is nowhere near enough to eradicate winter in the mid-Atlantic.

Also, weather is variable: The planet would have extreme highs and lows with or without an overall warming trend.

And for all the recent snow in Washington, it hasn't been that cold -- mostly in the 20s or low 30s. The average temperature in Washington in January, according to the National Climatic Data Center, was about a degree warmer than the average for the last 40 years.

But the reverse is also true: The fact that Vancouver, Canada, is experiencing record-high temperatures and importing snow for the Winter Olympics doesn't prove a warming trend..."

The more likely key to actual climate change is observe sea levels and the Arctic ice pack, both of which indicate warming is occurring, though it is quite possible that this winter may blunt the trend. Over the history of Planet Earth, the benign climate of the past ten thousand years is an oddity; the typical climate has many more and larger temperature swings than we've experienced in our human history.

Founding Fathers And Church

This post has an excellent summary supporting the notion that the nation's founders were not of the religious loon variety, in case you didn't know they were mostly Deists. Daily Kos: Our Founders were NOT Fundamentalists: "...Actual Founder-President #1, George Washington, became an Anglican as required for original military service under the British, and occasionally quoted scripture. But he vehemently opposed any church-state union. In a 1790 letter to the Jews of Truro, he wrote: The “Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistances, requires only that they who live under its protection, should demean themselves as good citizens.” A 1796 treaty he signed says “the government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” Washington rarely went to church and by some accounts refused last religious rites..."

Fox Warns GOP

When your owner speaks, you must listen.

FOXNews.com - Don't Screw It Up, Republicans: "...Last week, Republican Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama placed a blanket hold on each and every one of President Obama’s nominees currently before the Senate for confirmation because the Alabama Senator sought to raise attention to the lack of support for key pork barrel projects in his state. The Shelby Stick-Up could have potentially ended up being the Republican version of the Louisiana Purchase and Cornhusker Kickback that have recently helped sink the Democratic brand. Fortunately for Republicans, Shelby decided to release his holds on most of Obama's nominees after only a few days, thus preventing public outrage from fomenting.
Nonetheless, Shelby’s unprincipled obstructionism is instructive on how Republicans should not act if they wish to regain power.

'I guess if you needed one example of what’s wrong with this town, it might be that one senator can hold up 70 qualified individuals to make government work better because he didn’t get his earmarks,' White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said, echoing a line of attack against Republicans that Shelby’s actions opened up.

Regardless of the fact that Shelby lifted most of his holds, Republicans in the Senate must speak up and denounce the Alabama Senator’s political maneuver lest the entire party suffer because of the actions of one disgraceful Senator.

But it isn’t just Richard Shelby’s shenanigans that endanger the Republican brand going into November. The birtherism that raised its ugly head at last weekend’s Tea Party convention in Nashville is also potentially disastrous..."

While physically disability that limits movement may be less endemic among children than adults, this is nonetheless a national campaign equating 'moving' with 'getting thin/healthy,' without regard for an implicitly disablist message.

And, naturally, it also fails wholly to take into consideration that not everyone who 'moves' loses weight, anyway. There are fat people who regularly exercise, whose bodies persistently stay 'overweight,' laying waste to the 'calories in, calories out' meme..."

Do you know how much time it takes to run that much? Answer: More than I could spare and tend to my family and my job. So why don't just jump to the inevitable conclusion of this MADD-like campaign and shoot all fat people. That way no one will have to look at us, or smell our second smoke, or be offended by our overheated bodies. As far as that dieting suggestion goes, instead of telling me to stop eating, walk a mile in my sneakers and try not breathing. That's just about how easy it is to stop eating, and yes I've gone the rabbit food route with virtually no success. The only thing that does in fact work for me is massive amounts of exercise. So, the "Move" might help some kids, but for many others, they may be even more demonized by the BMI dictators.

Having It Both Ways on Medicare - Paul Krugman Blog - NYTimes.com: "One of the truly amazing things about the health care debate is the way Republicans have managed to pose as defenders of Medicare. The death panel thing has been absolutely central to their argument. For example, when I was debating Roger Ailes on This Week, his response to my Massachusetts comparison — that the Senate bill was basically the same as Romneycare — was to start blustering that Mitt Romney didn’t slash Medicare benefits.

It’s all hypocrisy, of course. Remember what the 1995 government shutdown was about: it was Newt Gingrich trying to force Bill Clinton to accept, yes, deep cuts in Medicare. And it’s not just history: Republican plans to balance the budget rely crucially on … deep cuts in Medicare..."

Of The O Unsocialist I Sing

Riverdaughter comments on O saying that he is just fine with people making lotsa moola: Krugman says, “We’re doomed” « The Confluence: "...Ya know, I’m a liberal and I don’t begrudge people making money either, as long as they don’t do it by electing politicians that will get rid of the rules for them so they can speculate recklessly with other peoples’ money, get in over their heads, ruin innocent citizens’ retirement plans, jobs and livelihoods and then give some of the “bonus” money they made with taxpayer bailout funds to the “Mashie Niblick Widows and Orphans Fund” of their choice so they can look like they’re being good guys while they’re applying for a tax deduction for charitable contributions. Now, *that’s* chutzpah! How is it that Barack Obama admires these “savvy businessmen”? Obama is one of them..

Some of us are seeing our industries decimated and our friends’ careers irretrievably gone to Asia, our lives ruined by these insensitive, “What’s mine is mine; what’s yours is mine” bizspeaking, short sighted, greedy, testosterone poisoned adolescents posing as men (and it’s almost exclusively men) and Obama wants us to “cut’em a break”? Compare them to a talented ballplayer who sells his body parts to wealthy men for sport? At least major league ballplayers are ENTERTAINING!

By the way, tea partiers, this should prove to you once and for all that Obama is NOT a socialist."

The Daily Flashback: Plame Edition

Just when you think No Quarter has gone all Republican-lite, Larry Johnson unleashes a fusillade at Skippy the Wonder Bush and his team of Screaming Sissies-- Republican National Security Leak Hypocrisy : NO QUARTER:

"Aw, pity the poor, oppressed Republicans who are in high dudgeon over the Obama Administration’s “playing politics” with terrorism. Really? As I recall it was not the Obama Administration that jumped on the arrest of Abdulmuttalab-i.e., the failed underwear bomber–to tout their prowess as a fighter of Al Qaeda. Nope. It was the Republicans who insisted that Obama had surrendered to terrorists because the FBI, per standard practice, arrested the suspect because he was on U.S. territory and U.S. law applied.

As I have noted before, the FBI followed the same procedure they employed in previous, similar cases. The arrest of failed shoe bomber, Richard Reid, back in December 2001 is the very same thing. We did not hear from one elected Republican back then accusing Bush of being “soft” on terrorists. Not one insisted that Reid go to Guantanamo.

And don’t give me the bullshit that “this is different.” The only difference here is that Umar Farouk is Nigerian and flew to Detroit. Both men had training from Al Qaeda operatives. Here is what is really galling.

Republican crocodile tears on “politicizing terrorism.” Especially from the likes of Kit Bond. Here’s what I wrote five years ago:.."

Bush Lovers Rejoice!

Miss Me Yet Billboard Featuring George W. Bush in Minnesota - AOL News: "It's only been a year since a helicopter flew him out of the capital right after the inauguration of President Barack Obama. But some Americans will be pleased to know that George W. Bush is out there, watching over them after all. From a billboard, high above Interstate Highway 35 near Wyoming, Minn., to be exact. And he wants to know if you miss him..."

"Miss me Yet?" No, not "No," but "Hell, No." So far, for all his incompetence, Obama has not managed to let a major American city drown, nor has he started an unnecessary war, emptying our Treasury and killing thousands, nor has he bankrupted the Republic (yet), nor has he trampled all over our Constitution and our civil liberties. Begone Bush! And Bush-lites. We needed greatness in the White House and we got mediocrity but at least we didn't get raging hate and stupidity to go with it.

Budget Eaters

Beat the Press Archive | The American Prospect: "The NYT and every one else keeps saying that Social Security is one of the three most rapidly growing items in the budget. This is not true. Defense spending grew more rapidly over the last decade. We spent $655.8 billion on defense in 2009 more than double the $306.1 billion spent in 2001. $By comparison, Social Security spending rose by just over 50 percent during these years from $429.4 billion in 2001 to $677.7 billion last year. If we're looking forward, interest spending is projected to grow more rapidly. So it is simply inaccurate to list Social Security among the areas of most rapid spending growth in the budget..."

Who's Your O'Daddy?

"Irony of ironies: Obama, Wall Street and the Hamilton Project"--Cannonfire: "...Obama gets into power with donations from the big financials. He spent his first year in office coddling that crowd. That coddling alienated much of his progressive base. It also allowed the right to create a fake 'populist' movement against him.

Now he is slowly coming 'round to the idea of regulating Wall Street -- because that's the only way to salvage both this rotten economy and his failing presidency. The Street gang says in reply: 'We brought you into this world, and we'll take you out.' No money for 2012. International corporate money will be the deciding factor in upcoming elections, thanks to our lovely Supreme Court.

Neither the progs nor the tea-baggers will forgive him for Year One. The Republicans energized their base through anti-Street rhetoric -- yet they'll win elections with Street money.

Wot I calls irony, that is."

Wasting A Crisis

Republicans and the Populist Temptation - WSJ.com: "...Since then the market rally has tracked the demise, one by one, of all these initiatives, because investors could see that a political environment that had been far out of equilibrium was quickly finding its balance. Republicans stayed unified in their opposition, while in every case key Democrats lost their nerve.

Since the stimulus, precisely nothing has been accomplished by the Obama administration or the Democratic Congress. The good crisis went to waste, and stocks soared..."

Where Were They In 2005?

Analysis: Where does the Tea Party go from here? - CNN.com: "As the National Tea Party Convention concluded this weekend, it's clear that the Tea Partiers are propelled by two competing claims -- a principled commitment to fiscal conservatism and a serious case of Obama Derangement Syndrome.

The first group remains true to the roots of the movement as it emerged almost one year ago amid bailout backlash. They feel like modern Paul Reveres, warning their fellow citizens about the unsustainable nature of our government's deficit spending and unprecedented debt..."

I'll say it again: Deficit spending was no problem with these people when Bush was driving the country into fiscal ruin, so why not just admit to being another stealth GOP operation? Oh, I know. Then it wouldn't be stealth and they couldn't claim to be non-partisan then.

Flogging Cumo

Blaming Bank of America - WSJ.com: "...Mr. Cuomo's drive to pump up the volume on taxpayer-backed mortgages didn't stop at Fannie and Freddie. In 2008, Wayne Barrett wrote in the leftist Village Voice about the changes Mr. Cuomo wrought at the Federal Housing Administration, encouraging bigger loans with smaller down payments.

Even if one believes the allegations hurled by the New York Attorney General, Mr. Cuomo has done far more harm to taxpayers and investors than the defendants, by any reasonable measure. A better use of time would be to investigate his own involvement in the mortgage meltdown in the hope that he will do less damage while taxpayers continue to pay his salary."

He’s turned out to be pretty much what I expected: an assertive, principled, liberal Democrat who is a royal pain in the ass to the Republicans and some Democrats alike. He opens his mouth and shameless liberal ideals come out of it. Watching him go after insurance companies that cut people off at their sickest, defense contractors who force rape victims into mediation and Joe Lieberman’s endless monotone bogarting of the Senate mic has been a joy and a pleasure. The deficit threatens economic recovery, we’re told; it puts American economic stability at risk; it will undermine our influence in the world. O'Web Woes

Newsmax - Obama Surrendering Internet to Foreign Powers: "Without the ingenuity of America’s brightest minds and the investment of U.S. taxpayer dollars, there would be no Internet, as we now know it today.

Now, the Obama administration has moved quietly to cede control of the Web from the United States to foreign powers..."

Ok, some of the comments in this post deserve a little more highlighting:

...Just this past spring, within months of Obama's taking office, his administration, through the Department of Commerce, agreed to relinquish some control over IANA and their governance. The Obama administration has agreed to give greater representation to foreign companies and countries on IANA.

This amounts to one small step for internationalism and one giant leap for surrendering America's control over an invention we have every right and responsibility to control and manage...
My bold, btw:

...We invented it, and we paid for the research and implementation that made it
possible. We are the freest, most tolerant nation on earth, we believe in the fundamental right of free speech, and we practice a free market of commerce and ideas.

America has always been against censorship and has shared its invention with the world without fee or unreasonable or arbitrary restriction. The user fee to operate on the Internet is not one paid to the U.S. government; a consumer pays it to private Internet companies, who provide access to the Internet through servers for their subscribers...

After you get off the floor laughing, try watching some skin porn on your toob, then go practice tolerance by driving through urban America with a Rebel flag flying or try booming some busting hip-hop through rural America and find out just how far that tolerance goes. Yeah, we're tolerant. Just not that tolerant.

I do agree with the gist of the post that the U.S. should retain control, but I am not going to delude myself about the reasons why we should retain control.

Comment Of The Day

From bluelyon in "Evils"--Cannonfire: "...But I also feel so disconnected from the Democratic Party that I despair daily. Really I do. I take no pleasure in the fact that they are probably going to lose their majority in Congress in 2010. Damn, I was a 50-state strategy field organizer, for crying out loud. But what do we do when the Democratic Party has so thoroughly sold us down the river?

Worse, even if I wanted to defend them, they aren't giving me any material. Gawd, it was hard enough when I was working as a field organizer, but back then the Dems were in the minority. Everything we did was to get them the much vaunted majority. We did it. And all through the times we worked for them, we choked back our frustration when Dems didn't stand up for Democratic values and rolled over for the Republicans. Still we soldiered on and they got all three brass rings. And what did they do with it? Rolled over, just like they did when they were in the minority..."

The O'Thrill Is Gone

Ajami: The Obama Spell Is Broken - WSJ.com: "...There is nothing surprising about where Mr. Obama finds himself today. He had been made by charisma, and political magic, and has been felled by it. If his rise had been spectacular, so, too, has been his fall. The speed with which some of his devotees have turned on him—and their unwillingness to own up to what their infatuation had wrought—is nothing short of astounding. But this is the bargain Mr. Obama had made with political fortune.

He was a blank slate, and devotees projected onto him what they wanted or wished. In the manner of political redeemers who have marked—and wrecked—the politics of the Arab world and Latin America, Mr. Obama left the crowd to its most precious and volatile asset—its imagination. There was no internal coherence to the coalition that swept him to power. There was cultural 'cool' and racial absolution for the white professional classes who were the first to embrace him. There was understandable racial pride on the part of the African-American community that came around to his banners after it ditched the Clinton dynasty..."

The payout is part of a previously known $195 million award that was due to employees of the AIG Financial Products unit.

The latest awards have drawn fire from Republicans in Congress, including Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, who said AIG 'outmaneuvered' the Obama administration and now has taxpayers 'over a barrel...'"

Tibetian Myths...

... or why I love the Internet. In my post below, commenter Billy Pilgrim turned me on to this link: http://dissidentvoice.org/Articles9/Parenti_Tibet.htm (click here), which gave me quite the education on Tibet, some of which of I was vaguely aware of but none of which I was keenly aware of. A sample:

...In addition to being under a lifetime bond to work the lord's land---or the monastery's land---without pay, the serfs were obliged to repair the lord's houses, transport his crops, and collect his firewood. They were also expected to provide carrying animals and transportation on demand. "It was an efficient system of economic exploitation that guaranteed to the country's religious and secular elites a permanent and secure labor force to cultivate their land holdings without burdening them either with any direct day-to-day responsibility for the serf's subsistence and without the need to compete for labor in a market context." [17]

The common people labored under the twin burdens of the corve (forced unpaid labor on behalf of the lord) and onerous tithes. They were taxed upon getting married, taxed for the birth of each child, and for every death in the family. They were taxed for planting a new tree in their yard, for keeping domestic or barnyard animals, for owning a flower pot, or putting a bell on an animal. There were taxes for religious festivals, for singing, dancing, drumming, and bell ringing. People were taxed for being sent to prison and upon being released. Even beggars were taxed. Those who could not find work were taxed for being unemployed, and if they traveled to another village in search of work, they paid a passage tax. When people could not pay, the monasteries lent them money at 20 to 50 percent interest. Some debts were handed down from father to son to grandson. Debtors who could not meet their obligations risked being placed into slavery for as long as the monastery demanded, sometimes for the rest of their lives. [18]...

Sometimes things are not even close to how they seem. Should China be ruling Tibet? Probably not. Should Tibet be ruling Tibet the way they did rule Tibet? Definitely not. Food for thought.

Super Bowl Dobson Ad Response

What Tim Tebow's Super Bowl ad can teach the pro-choice movement - washingtonpost.com: "...So here's our Super Bowl strategy for the choice movement. We'd go with a 30-second spot, too. The camera focuses on one woman after another, posed in the situations of daily life: rushing out the door in the morning for work, flipping through a magazine, washing dishes, teaching a class of sixth-graders, wheeling a baby stroller. Each woman looks calmly into the camera and describes her different and successful choice: having a baby and giving it up for adoption, having an abortion, having a baby and raising it lovingly. Each one being clear that making choices isn't easy, but that life without tough choices doesn't exist."
