Gasp! Rove Lies!
For years, all the pundit-types used to gobble up Rove's lies. He's still doing it. But now, reporters seem genuinely surprised that Rove would lie about the Iraq war. I should say, lie again about the Iraq war.
Actually, media, you should know by now, really you should know, that if Rove says something, it's probably not true. He's got no power now -- and he's still playing you for a bunch of patsies."

Turnabout
"Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), through a spokeswoman, now acknowledges she is blocking former Rep. James Rogan's (R-Calif.) nomination to the federal bench because of his role in impeaching former president Bill Clinton.
The Sleuth first touched on Rogan's nomination earlier this week in a piece about Rogan reaching out to the 42nd president. For that piece, Boxer declined to say whether the impeachment issue had anything to do with her opposition to Rogan's nomination to a federal judgeship. Her spokeswoman said Boxer is denying Rogan a hearing because of his record in Congress against abortion rights, cleaning up the environment, helping organized workers and stopping gun violence..."
Screwing The Teachers
"Schools and local governments in Florida who routinely deposited excess money in a state run investment fund were stunned today when the state suspended withdrawals.
This is because the nimrods who ran the fund were “investing” in extremely risky SIVs. Word got out, there was a run on the fund, now the state has slammed the door shut...
...Bloomberg TV just had an interview with a school official in a Florida town who said, I’ve got a $850,000 payroll for 230 employees to make tomorrow and no money to do it with because the state froze the money. He sounded practically in tears."

'But they also, surprisingly enough, even in rural Iowa, recognize the opportunity to send a signal to the world that, you know, we are not as ingrown, as parochial as you may perceive. ... ..' - Barack Obama
Even in rural Iowa... you know, because them rural voters, they aren't as 'ingrown, as parochial' as the intelligent city folk believe and by golly, they're going to send a message! Ingrown? Hmmm.... Coming from Columbia, Missouri myself, you know, out beyond the big city lights, 'ingrown' to me means inbred. You know, like the Ozarks, marryin' your brother 'n all. However, dumb hicks from the sticks, even in rural Iowa, want to send a signal to the world. Country folk and Iowans are going to fight that 'ingrown' and 'parochial' image, by golly.
Good grief.

What Could You Buy With The Iraq War?
The Goose and the Gander
When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi traveled to Syria to visit President Bashar al-Assad last spring, the right wing immediately excoriated her diplomatic efforts.
President Bush said the trip “sends mixed signals” to the Assad government, and Dana Perino called the trip “a really bad idea.” Vice President Dick Cheney said Assad’s “bad behavior’s being rewarded.” Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) viciously accused Democrats of being “so drunk with grandiose visions of deposing Bush that they break bread with terrorists and enemies of the United States...”

On Lott's Trot
"Trent Lott was quick, in his two appearances yesterday, to rule out health and scandal as reasons for his sudden and very surprising resignation from the Senate. But Washingtonians know that whenever a politician leaves to “spend more time with his family,” there are likely to be other reasons. Sources in Mississippi law enforcement inform No Comment that FBI agents are now raiding the law office of Richard “Dickie” Scruggs in Oxford. Scruggs is the brother-in-law of Trent Lott, and, as we reported earlier, several Mississippi newspapers openly questioned whether Lott had intervened to protect Scruggs in a recent criminal probe that produced the prosecution of a number of other Mississippi lawyers and judges with whom he was closely connected. Could there be a connection between the FBI raid and the Lott resignation? Just asking."

Rape In Arabia
"They're barbaric. A backwards, barbaric country that has far too much power for its 12th century maturity. Had we bothered investing in alternative energy right after September 11 we'd have a chance to start, eventually, decreasing the stranglehold that barbarians like the Saudis, the Iranis, Chavez in Venezuela and more have over our nation. Instead, we're wedded to these loons now more than ever (and oil is now hitting $100/barrel). Enough is enough, the madness needs to stop. In addition to faulting Bush, Cheney and the Republicans, who wouldn't dare help America become energy independent lest it hurt their corporate buddies in the oil industry, I fault the enviro groups and the pro-Israel lobby for not doing more following September 11 (and the invasion of Iraq) to take advantage of the growing national consensus that our ties to Middle Eastern oil countries are harming rather than helping America. We had a chance to do something about this, and the groups, like (liberal) groups always do, dropped the ball."

The Queen of Hearts Race Card
Skippy The Scientist Slings Cells
"Yesterday’s announced breakthrough on stem-cell research is obviously good news for medicine, public health, and scientific advancements. The Bush White House, which has stood in the laboratory door for seven years, suddenly feels justified...
...Look, we should all be really pleased by yesterday’s news, and the scientific advancements offer hope for life-saving medical research. But for the White House to suggest that Bush deserves some kind of credit for the progress is nonsense. In fact, the opposite is true.
One of the researchers involved in yesterday’s reports said the Bush restrictions may have slowed discovery of the new method, since scientists first had to study embryonic cells to find out how to accomplish the same thing without embryos.
“My feeling is that the political controversy set the field back four or five years,” said James Thomson, who led a team at the University of Wisconsin and who discovered human embryonic stem cells in 1998."

Sounds like a damning new book by the former Bush press secretary:
"The most powerful leader in the world had called upon me to speak on his behalf and help restore credibility he lost amid the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq," writes McClellan. "So I stood at the White house briefing room podium in front of the glare of the klieg lights for the better part of two weeks and publicly exonerated two of the senior-most aides in the White House: Karl Rove and Scooter Libby."
But his press performances weren't based on the facts, McClellan continues.
"There was one problem. It was not true," he writes. "I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice President, the President's chief of staff, and the president himself."

Where Bridge Leads Us
"...As an aside, I can understand why the American team made the point that they didn't vote for Bush. Anyone who travels regularly abroad knows that wearing your anti-Bushism on your sleeve is the next best thing to Kevlar in terms of self-preservation. The world hates George Bush, they hate our government because of George Bush and the Republicans (and the war and Gitmo and more), and they're not very happy with the fact that Americans voted twice for the idiot. (Once, they can understand - mistakes happen - but twice? Second time you own him.) I routinely let people know that I didn't vote for Bush when I'm abroad. Why? Because the conversation routinely goes like this:
Them: You speak great [insert language here]. Me: Thank you. Them: But you're American? Me: Yes. Them: So where are you from in America? Me: Washington, DC. Them: [stone silence accompanied by cocked head and odd stare.] Me: I didn't vote for Bush. Them: [Cold face melts to smile.] Ah... good! [Animated conversation continues, followed by new lifelong friendship.]
The thing is, I'm not kidding. That's quite literally a conversation I've had repeatedly, verbatim, with lots and lots and lots of foreigners. I am sick and tired of getting disparaging silence every time I say I'm from DC. Foreigners just assume that we support this idiot, and they loathe him, and us by extension, if they assume we support him, us. No more. I get that politics stops at the border. I get that we're supposed to rally around the flag when we're abroad. But George Bush isn't the flag. George Bush burns the flag every time he opens his mouth or lifts his pen. George Bush is an embarrassment to everything this country stands for, or stood for. So the notion that we should refrain from criticizing Bush when abroad, especially because it might upset dictators, is, well, something I have a hard time accepting.
So I get why the national team felt the need to speak out. It's high time more of us did."
I feel a cosmic connection between this story and the recent behavior of the US Women's Soccer team.

"Mr. Belzer,
As a member of the Wall Street society for the past 25 years, I am disgusted by the policies of greed that have pounded working class Americans into submission. The propaganda of which you speak is a consistent message which memorizes the ill-informed to act in ways that are contrary to their own self interests. As a consequence, the priorities of the upper class are mistakenly embraced by the working class.
In the short term this approach has worked very well. The rich have become substantially richer . Virtually all of their goals with the exception of the estate tax, have been accomplished. At the same time the American public has been substantially dumbed down in terms of their awareness of what is happening at their expense. In the long run I fear that the stage has been set for a dramatic political/economic shift which no one can either predict or prevent..."

UFOs Abounding
'WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich may have been ridiculed for saying he had seen a UFO, but for some former military pilots and other observers, unidentified flying objects are no laughing matter.
An international panel of two dozen former pilots and government officials called on the U.S. government on Monday to reopen its generation-old UFO investigation as a matter of safety and security given continuing reports about flying discs, glowing spheres and other strange sightings.

Does this make any sense? What threats are we incapable of dealing with? And if they exist, why hasn't Bush/Cheney (and congressional Republicans) done anything about it? "I was in London, 24 years ago today, on Guy Fawkes Night. The cutest little kid, with the cutest little accent, was asking for pennies outside one of the Tube stations. I was 19. Fawkes will always remind me, now, of the movie "V for Vendetta," which increasingly creeps me out, and moves me, every time I watch it, as it has an awful lot to do with the world and country(ies) we live in today.
Remember, remember the Fifth of November,I've watched V at least a dozen times and I'm with John on this one-- the more you watch the weirder you get. (If Dexter works the same way, my mental health will soon be suspect.) Critics said the movie was a modern morality play and that it was more about the US and Bush than about the Brits and Blair. The miniseries was about an alien invasion and was pretty darn good. It used the premise of alien invasion to demonstrate how a facist regime can take over a civilization, using methods pioneered by everyone's favorite villains-- the Nazis. (As the industry is prone to do, a series was spun-off and it jumped the shark early on with interspecial breeding-- they're always wanting to cross an aardvark with a kangaroo in Hollywood.) The two V's used different methods to achieve the authoritarian wet-dream of a High Ruler, but the result is always the same-- eventual chaos and destruction and revolution. Budding fascists might do well to consult with another V-- a Vulcan. The Bushpires will not long endure.

Will Laments
'"Republicans, supposed defenders of limited government, actually are enablers of an unlimited presidency. Their belief in strict construction of the Constitution evaporates, and they become, in behavior if not in thought, adherents of the woolly idea of a "living Constitution." They endorse, by their passivity, the idea that new threats justify ignoring the Framers' text and logic about shared responsibility for war-making.
Unless and until Congress stops prattling about presidential "usurpation" of power and asserts its own, it will remain derelict regarding its duty of mutual participation in war-making. And it will merit its current marginalization," - George F. Will, one of a growing number of real conservatives in Washington, standing up to the Decider.'

That is just plain outrageous. These were trips paid for by the toy industry, the industry now under scrutiny for cutting corners. Corners that earn big profits for industry CEOs and send toxic toys into our children's bedrooms...
...Chairwoman Nancy Nord should step down. It's time to put a Chairperson in place who is not satisfied with 'we're doing the best we can.' We need a chairperson who fights for the authority and resources the CPSC needs to do the job it is supposed to so.
