The sad reality is that it also offers an opening to the religious marketing crowds in this country who don't like liberals taking some of their God turf. Donahue and the Family Research Council can once again bang the drums that Democrats don't understand people of faith, especially Catholics, while also submitting that our candidates do not pass the faith litmus test.
But stop a moment and look at Edwards policies, especially compared to the Republicans rich-pimping, pro-torture, pro-preemptive war, pro secrecy, pro gutting social programs elitist, top down idea of governing. In contrast, Edwards is campaigning to lift the poor out of poverty. Unions for the middle class. Universal health care. The list is endless. But that won't stop the religious swiftboating. It's already begun.
Faithful liberals, man the pews."
