Pouring Salt Into A Wound

As someone whose pay has been cut (but with no time off for compensation), I find this, ahem, annoying, to say the very least.

Charlotte Front and Center: North Carolina Banks Want Your Tax Dollars for Employee Bonuses: "...Last year, the North Carolina Banking commission paid out $500,000. in bonuses. Add in the factor of Wall Street paying their employees much the same as last year, while our government spends and makes budget cuts on jobs and services for the middle-class. This should make North Carolina citizens angry as well as all U.S. citizens.

The same people who helped cause this trouble want bonuses of 10%..."

Nader Accuses McAuliffe of Suppressing Votes - Virginia Politics -: "Consumer activist Ralph Nader accused Terry McAuliffe Thursday of orchestrating an effort to remove him from the presidential ballot in 2004 when McAuliffe was chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

Nader said that McAuliffe offered him an unspecified amount of money to campaign in 31 states if Nader would agree to pull his campaign in 19 battleground states.

'When you get a call like that, first of all it's inappropriate,'' Nader said in an interview. 'The other thing is if you don't immediately say no, it's like taffy, you get stuck with it...'"

Comment Of The Day: Supreme Edition

Get ready for the Sotomayor misogyny-fest : NO QUARTER: "Comment by Patrick Walker | 2009-05-27 12:56:17

60% of her decisions were later overturned and apparently 95% of her judgements are in line with the corporate line. If she has a choice with siding with workers or with corporate entities, she sides with the corporations. That’s *not* what’s needed anymore. The power of corporations has to be broken, not strengthened with a Sotomajor pick.

The WSJ all but loves her which should be sending warning flags…

Liberals will be just as deceived by Obama’s SCOTUS picks as they were with him getting elected."

Memorial Day

It's "Thank You" day in my house-- a day which I say thanks to all the veterans and from a veteran "Thank you, America" for giving me an opportunity to serve this great, if imperfect, country.

My dad, in the b&w photo, was a man that existed mostly to me as a mythic figure. I finally got to know him a little bit late in his life (that's a long story, involving the military, the VA, and nefarious relatives)and I have never met a more humble man, nor one more devoted to his country, though he didn't quite know what to do about me since for nearly his entire life I had been a toddler. He was man whose memories were trapped in amber, locked into a time during the war and shortly thereafter.

I'd also like to say thank you to everyone who offered support and prayers for my son while he was in Iraq. He's back now-- safe and sound, but now waiting for deployment to Afghanistan. I'm hoping he doesn't go but he says, "Dad, that's where the mission is," echoing words I spoke to my mother in 1965.

So, thank you, America, and thank you, veterans, for giving me America.

'Rasslin' On High

'Terror debate' is phony drama | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press: "The viewing public loves a fight, even when the match is rigged and the final decision a foregone conclusion. How else to explain the continued popularity of professional wrestling, or why some 50-year-olds can't help but linger when their channel-surfing chances on an old Road Runner cartoon?

And so, in the absence of a celebrity death or a world-class police chase, those of us who lack the sense to unplug are doomed to spend our Memorial Day holiday witnessing endless recapitulations of last week's 'terror debate' between Barack Obama and Dick Cheney, even though everyone knows that confrontation was as phony as anything the WWF ever staged..."

He can insist sternly and forcefully that he is more trustworthy than Barack Obama in knowing how to deal with terrorists but he can’t run from this one fact–MORE AMERICANS DIED FROM TERRORIST ATTACKS DURING THE REIGN OF GEORGE BUSH AND DICK CHENEY THAN DIED DURING THE PRESIDENCIES OF KENNEDY, JOHNSON, NIXON, FORD, CARTER, REAGAN, BUSH I AND CLINTON COMBINED..."

Reform But Not Reformation

The year for health care: "'The stars are aligned' for health care reform this year, President Obama said Wednesday.

We'll soon find out. The signs are awfully encouraging: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has set an ambitious time frame of July to get legislation on the floor. Instead of fighting tooth and nail against any changes, representatives of the health care industry have pledged to cut cost increases by 1.5 percent per year, potentially saving $2 trillion over the next 10 years. And even some businesses are nominally on board: Obama met with executives from enormous companies that have successfully cut their own health care costs, including Safeway, Johnson & Johnson and Microsoft.

Still, trouble lurks just below the surface..."

The Truth About Richard Bruce Cheney : NO QUARTER: "...Less important but still busting my chops as a Republican, is the damage that the Sith Lord Cheney is doing to my political party.

He and Rush Limbaugh seem to be its leaders now. Lindsay Graham, John McCain, John Boehner, and all other Republicans of note seem to be either so enamored of Cheney-Limbaugh (or fearful of them?) or, on the other hand, so appalled by them, that the cat has their tongues. And meanwhile fewer Americans identify as Republicans than at any time since WWII. We’re at 21% and falling–right in line with the number of cranks, reprobates, and loonies in the country.

When will we hear from those in my party who give a damn about their country and about the party of Lincoln?

When will someone of stature tell Dick Cheney that enough is enough? Go home. Spend your 70 million. Luxuriate in your Eastern Shore mansion. Shoot quail with your friends–and your friends.

GI Vote Didn't Count

The Associated Press: Report: One-fourth of overseas votes go uncounted: "WASHINGTON (AP) — One out of every four ballots requested by military personnel and other Americans living overseas for the 2008 election may have gone uncounted, according to findings being released at a Senate hearing Wednesday.

Sen. Charles Schumer, chairman of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, said the study, while providing only a snapshot of voting patterns, 'is enough to show that the balloting process for service members is clearly in need of an overhaul.'

The committee, working with the Congressional Research Service, surveyed election offices in seven states with high numbers of military personnel: California, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and West Virginia.

It said that of 441,000 absentee ballots requested by eligible voters living abroad — mainly active-duty and reserve troops — more than 98,000 were 'lost' ballots that were mailed out but never received by election officials. Taking into account 13,500 ballots that were rejected for such reasons as a missing signature or failure to notarize, one-quarter of those requesting a ballot were disenfranchised.

Corrupt Census Possible?

Charlotte Front and Center: ACORN Should Not Be Involved with the Census Bureau
"ACORN Should Not Be Involved with the Census Bureau

With evidence mounting that ACORN committed registration fraud is raising national concern that ACORN employees should not be working for the Census Bureau. The first line of defense from ACORN officials is that registration fraud seldom leads to voter fraud. Never mind the fact that tax payer dollars were abused when paying for these false registrations from ACORN employees.

Despite new charges brought against ACORN for voter fraud, the real concern today is the role that ACORN will play with the Census Bureau. The Bureau under the Obama administration must now report directly to the White House. The Census Bureau is suppose to be non-partisan, but the fact that ACORN is playing a primary role in collecting information is cause for concern since findings will bring political consequences. I'm sure this will set-off a flood of crocodile tears from certain quarters, but these places should have been shuttered before they ever opened. GOP Of Reactionaries

GOP Tries to Dig Out of Its Hole - WSJ.com: "If you're trying to figure how bad things are for Republicans, consider this: More Americans say they are conservatives than say they are part of the Republican Party -- which is supposed to be, after all, the party of conservatives..."

Since I'm a moderate, that makes me either a liberal conservative or conservative liberal, a label that fits neither Republican nor Democratic preferences. The GOP is a not a conservative political party. That left that mantle when the influence of Nelson Rockefeller and Barry Goldwater began to wane. Reagan was not a conservative, either. Like his descendants, he was a reactionary-- longing for a return to the Really Good Old Days-- you know, kinda like the antebellum South. If the GOP hitches their banner to that wagon train, they will remain encircled and irrelevant for a generation. A move away from the nuttier aspects of social conservatives toward a conservative fiscal policy would help recruit new members, but I'm not holding my breath. Oh, btw, reverse everything I've said and substitute "Democrats" and you have the same mess from a different direction (though I think the Democrats think they're going to fast-forward into some pseudo-Orwellian utopia- see Farmer's New Riders of the Purple Wage).

About That Flu

1918 Spanish Flu vs. Mexican Flu: Part 2

"...Influenza pandemics have occurred as far back in history as we can look, but the four we know about in detail happened in 1889, 1918, 1957 and 1968. The mildest of these, the so-called Hong Kong flu in 1968, killed about 35,000 people in the United States and 700,000 worldwide. Ordinary seasonal influenza, in comparison, now kills 36,000 Americans a year, because the population has a higher proportion of elderly people and others with weak immune systems...

...All four of the well-known pandemics seem to have come in waves. The 1918 virus surfaced by March and set in motion a spring and summer wave that hit some communities and skipped others. This first wave was extremely mild, more so even than ordinary influenza: Of the 10,313 sailors in the British Grand Fleet who became ill, for example, only four died. But autumn brought a second, more lethal wave, which was followed by a less severe third wave in early 1919..."
