Raven's View: Arizona's Language Issues

Raven's View: Arizona's Language Issues: "Arizona's Language Issues

A bill to make English the official state language for all official government actions is moving closer to a vote by citizens (who are expected to pass the measure). A similar law was overturned in 1988 by the state Supreme Court, which ruled it unconstitutional because it denied access for non-English speaking citizens to their government. The new law would deny voting rights to anyone who does not speak English because all ballots would be required to be in English only. Backers are counting on our illustrious Republican Congress not to renew the Voting Rights Act in 2007. Yeah, voters don't need no stinkin' rights in this great democracy. "

...but on the other hand, multilingual conuntries do tend to end up in lingusiticly driven revolutions.
