The Blog | Joseph A. Palermo: A Tired Refrain: "Democrats, Move to the Right!" | The Huffington Post: "...Secondly, many of the victorious Democrats might have been a bit more socially conservative than in the past -- even though Claire McCaskill in Missouri made her support of stem-cell research a central part of her campaign (with the help of Michael J. Fox) and Sherrod Brown of Ohio is strongly pro-choice -- all of them opposed Bush's policies in Iraq. They might differ in their views of what needs to be done in the short term, but they all agree that our troops must be brought home and that the status quo is intolerable. The 2006 midterms were a referendum on the occupation of Iraq, and we must not allow the corporate media to frame their outcome in any other way.
Thirdly, the silliest argument of all is the idea that the Democrats must govern more like the Republicans or else risk losing their hard-won majorities. The voters sent a clear message that they are unhappy with the way the Republicans have been running the country; mimicking them is hardly a viable political strategy. The pundits downplay the fact that the Republican House Majority Leader was indicted for money laundering; that one of the most powerful Congressional Republicans is sitting in the slammer for taking $2 million in kickbacks from military contractors; that the most powerful Republican lobbyist is now in prison "lobbying" for time off for good behavior; and that the Republican Congress abrogated its Constitutional responsibility to oversee the Executive Branch. And the pundits see political gold for the Democrats if they move toward the GOP's model of governance?..."
