CAPITOL HILL (AP) — Her six grandchildren were with her for the historic moment, when Nancy Pelosi collected enough votes to make her the first woman speaker of the House of Representatives.
The 66-year-old San Francisco Democrat broke through what she calls the “marble ceiling” with family members and celebrities like Richard Gere and Tony Bennett — of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" fame — looking on.
Pelosi's prepared remarks for the occasion calling it a historic moment, not just for Congress, but for American women."
